What’s that in the sky? It’s not a bird or a plane, it’s a line worker suspended below a helicopter, flying into some of the most remote terrain to perform critical infrastructure work.

Our line workers were airlifted to seven locations near the summit by the Heavenly ski area, where our 111 Line is located. The area is characterized by terrain that is steep, covered with unstable granitic soil, and has no roads, making traditional access difficult, especially when transporting the tools, parts, and equipment needed to complete the required maintenance.

Following our annual inspections, our team replaced or repaired cross-arms, down guy wires, arrestors, cutouts, and other components. These routine inspections and follow-up repairs are not only regulatory requirements, they’re also essential to maintaining safe, reliable service.

While challenging in the best conditions, this high-elevation work is nearly impossible during winter. By completing it in the summer months, we can maintain system integrity and improve reliability throughout the year. This project is another example of the dedication and ingenuity required to keep the power flowing, no matter how remote the location.
