While October 4, 2023, is recognized as Energy Efficiency Day, Liberty supports and encourages energy efficiency year-round.

“Energy efficiency is a great first step when it comes to considering a more sustainable future for your home or business. By reducing your energy consumption, you help to lower greenhouse gas emissions, preserve resources, and may even save money in the process,” said Breanna Kelly, Program Manager II, Energy Efficiency at Liberty.

Being more energy efficient does not require major changes to your lifestyle, but it can have a lasting impact that benefits you and your community. As your electric utility provider, Liberty offers a variety of programs and resources to help you and local communities be more energy efficient.

Looking for a place to start? Follow these easy, no-cost tips to help you save energy

  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Don’t forget your computer.
  • Use your high energy-use appliances like dishwasher, clothes washer/dryer, and oven as late in the evening as possible.
  • Barbeque outdoors when practical. Reducing the heat coming into your home from any source, such as cooking, will reduce the load on your air conditioning.
  • Set your water heater to 120°F.
  • Vacuum your refrigerator coils, underneath and in the back. They need air space to work.
  • Winter Tips
    • Set the heating thermostat as low as comfort permits. For instance, each degree above 68°F can add 3 percent to the amount of energy needed for heating. Turn down your thermostat 5 to 10 degrees at bedtime
    • Raise shades and open curtains on the sunny side of your home to take advantage of free heat from the sun. Close the coverings on cloudy days or right after the sun sets.
    • Close foundation vents
  • Summer Tips
    • Set the thermostat to 78-80° when home, and 5-10° warmer at night or when you’re not home.
    • Close blinds and drapes during the day to keep heat out.
