Net energy metering means measuring the difference between the electricity supplied over the electric distribution system and the electricity generated by an eligible customer-generator which is fed back into the electric distribution system over a billing period.
Eligible customer-generator means an electric utility customer who owns and operates electrical generating facilities powered by renewable energy with a total peak generating capacity of not more than 1000 kilowatts that is located on the customer’s premises, sized appropriately, is interconnected and operates in parallel with the electric grid, and is intended primarily to offset part or all of the customer’s own electricity requirements.

What are the potential benefits of renewable power generation?
Installing a renewable power generation system can help reduce your monthly electric bill. Since most of the power is consumed locally, renewable power systems can also help to reduce demand on the utility’s distribution system during peak hours. These systems also help reduce carbon emissions.
If I install a solar system will I be completely disconnected from Liberty Utilities’ electricity system?
No. Solar systems do not operate constantly so there will still be a need to be interconnected to the Liberty distribution system. We will continue to operate and maintain our system 24/7.
Will I still receive a bill from Liberty Utilities?
Yes. You will get a bill each month that will have a fixed customer charge as well as charges for power that you take from our electric distribution system.
What do I need to know before installing renewable power equipment?
When your project is in the planning phase, and before you purchase equipment, please email us at CAnetmetering@libertyutilities.com or call at (530) 543-5216 Mon-Fri from 7 am to 4 pm.
Once you are ready to move forward with your project, a completed application package must be submitted to us. We will review the application and explain your obligations to interconnect to Liberty Utilities' distribution system.
What is Net Metering?
Net Metering allows an electric meter to spin forward or backward, so it can record both power used from the utility distribution system and power produced by the renewable power generator.
How are bills determined?
Net Meters look at the power you use compared to the power you generate. If you use more power from the distribution system than you generate, you will only be billed for the incremental power taken from the electric grid.
What happens if I generate excess power?
If you generate more power than you use during a billing period, your account will earn a credit equal to the power exported (measured in kWh). These credits will be rolled over monthly.
Can I turn my generating equipment on before my meter is installed?
No. In order to prevent billing issues, your system should be left off until a meter has been installed and you are contacted by Liberty Utilities informing you that the meter has been set.
When will I get my meter installed?
Once you have submitted all of the required completed documents, a Net Meter will be installed in approximately 10 days.
Do I need to be home when the meter is installed?
As long as your meter is located on the outside of your home, you do not need to be home.
How will I know if the meter has been installed?
Liberty Utilities will contact you to let you know when this is completed. You can also look for a Net Meter designation on the glass part of the meter.
What if my renewable system does not provide enough power?
If you use more power than your generation system can provide, Liberty will supply the additional power that you need without interruption.
Can I be on Equal Payment Plan billing and still participate in Net Metering?
No. Unfortunately, customers in the Net Metering program cannot be on the Equal Payment Plan.
