Rebuilding power lines in rugged mountain terrain was no easy task, but for a stronger electric system, more reliable service, and reduced wildfire risk, it was worth the challenge.
The project involved replacing nearly two miles of power line and rebuilding the circuit in a remote, difficult-to-access area. Aging equipment was replaced with new utility poles and covered conductor, which provides added protection against vegetation contact, weather, and other conditions that can contribute to power outages or potential wildfire ignition. Power lines were also rerouted away from structures and sensitive wetland areas to improve safety and reduce environmental impacts.
Because of the challenging mountain terrain, helicopters were used to transport materials and assist with construction. In total, 65 new poles were installed for this project, with approximately 75% of them set by helicopter.
In addition to electric system upgrades, Liberty worked closely with the U.S. Forest Service and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to improve forest health and reduce potential fuels near critical infrastructure. Crews removed hazardous trees, pruned vegetation, and used helicopters to remove more than 300 tons of biomass from the utility right-of-way. These efforts help reduce the risk of a wildfire ignition by removing vegetation that could contribute to wildfire spread as well as creating increased clearance around electric equipment.
Together, the infrastructure improvements and vegetation management work create a stronger, more resilient electric system that is better positioned to reduce wildfire risk and continue providing reliable service for residents and visitors in the Angora Lakes area.
