Introduction

Liberty Utilities provides electric service to the Lake Tahoe and surrounding region—one of the  most pristine areas of the country.  We are committed to providing clean, reliable energy to keep Tahoe blue and green!  Here’s some of the innovative and progressive things we’re doing to reduce our carbon footprint.

Eliminating Coal from our Power Mix

Starting in 2016, our Purchase Power Agreement (PPA) with NV Energy eliminated coal-fired energy sources while increasing renewable energy sources.  These clean energy sources help us meet the ever-increasing Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) imposed by the State of California on investor-owned utilities like Liberty Utilities.

Note: By December 31, 2020, the State of California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) target will be 33%.  Liberty Utilities received 22% of its energy from its Luning solar facility and purchased the remaining power from other sources in 2019, including 7% from geothermal resources which included renewable energy credits (RECs) needed to comply with CA’s standard.  However, Liberty Utilities estimates its total renewable power mix was 37% since the power it purchased from NV Energy also had a renewable component.
